25 Tools And Resources That Make Up A WordPress Membership Site

Tool bag

Among the most popular request in interviews is to list some of my favorite tools for WordPress. As time goes by and WordPress matures, this is almost a meaningless question. True, there are plugins I use on almost every project but for the most part, they aren’t set in stone every single time. I like to assess the project then use plugins, tools and code according to what fits the project best. In this light, there are many tools we use that are never written about or showcased because they don’t really fit anywhere. While working on a WordPress membership site – our very own TechBasedTraining – it occurred to me this would be a perfect opportunity to give you a peek into the many different tools we choose for a project like this. Kinda like peeking into the toolkit. Ready? Here we go. Plugins Wishlist Member – of course. We don’t always use Wishlist. For this project, Wishlist has been used for 2 years. Since were were updating the site, it was a good excuse to upgrade to the latest version. Backup Buddy – on almost all our sites. Usually for backups but in this case it served double duty. The

Password

This was sent out to our email subscribers last week but due to an incident that very same week, I feel compelled to post it here for your benefit. You know how you’re encouraged to create secure passwords and you end up with a 5ea11y h@rd 0n3? Yeah… like you’re going to remember that. I know all about Roboform, LastPass and 1Password. Can’t live without Roboform. The down side? I am often *severely* crippled when I don’t have access to these tools. It’s happened a few times. Now, I’ve changed my method. Thanks to a comic of all things, but this is not a joke. It IS secure and easy for humans. Ready? Simply string together a few random words, separate them by a space or some kind of symbol like % ^ or @ – anything. That’s it! For a clearer picture, check out xkcd. Do I still use RoboForm? Absolutely because there’s just too many. For the common stuff this is the method I’m using. Hope you found it helpful. It sure was for me Image by Digital Terrorist

Wasted Years And Money: Seduced By Other’s Creed

By Lynette · Comments (12)

Chained

Maybe it is a little overused by now, but I just can’t seem to get this particular quote from Steve Jobs out of my mind. “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” While I’ve read that many, many times over the years since his commencement address at Stanford, this time – this year – this particular advice became very real for me. I don’t know what changed or what happened. It wasn’t like there was a big rude awakening one day – few things in life work out like that. I think it was more of a gradual realization which became crystal clear. The great revelation? Not As Fulfilling As I Thought I don’t enjoy teaching as much as I initially thought. Well, actually I take that back. What I don’t enjoy is creating info products. In February of this

Help: Httpd Failed Notices

Fail

For those of you on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) or dedicated server, you may receive a notice like the one below once in a while. httpd failed @ Day Mth Date 13:16:26 20XX. A restart was attempted automagically. Service Check Method: [tcp connect] Failure Reason: Timeout while trying to get data from service: Died at /usr/local/cpanel/etc./etc/ line 459. Number of Restart Attempts: 1 Like most server messages the email you get it’s kinda cryptic isn’t it? Good thing you don’t have to decipher what it all means at that point. What it means is something went wrong and the server has attempted to restart itself. At the time of restart, the server will be down for a few minutes that means your sites will go offline. Pay close attention to the date and in particular time mentioned in the email then go check your sites. If they are up and running after that time, there’s a good chance the server righted itself and all is good. Do continue checking if the sites are up for the next few hours but other than that. If you checked and they are down long past the time in the email, there’s a

Solved: Video On Amazon S3 Downloading Instead of Playing

By Lynette · Comments (8)

Amazon S3 file metadata

Having used Amazon S3 to store and serve our media for a long time – many of them MP4 videos – without problems, I was a little stumped when we encountered a video that won’t play. When you load the URL to the video directly in your browser, it would download instead. Oddly enough, the very same video when uploaded to another account plays perfectly. As you can imagine, there are so many possibilities here. Is it the video player or the video itself or is it Amazon? It’s always frustrating when there are so many possibilities. However, since the video plays on another S3 account just fine the issue must be with the settings in Amazon. After quite a bit of time spent finding the solution, the culprit was in the metadata for that file. Not sure what was used to originally upload the file. We’ve used several tools from S3Fox to Clouberry and never encountered this. Somehow, the file’s metadata is not set. So if you are encountering this issue, make sure the correct metadata is set. In Amazon’s AWS Management Console, select the file in question, click on Actions > Properties and add/edit the key values. In

Mobile Optimized To Perform Better On Adwords

Mobile Optimized Landing Page

If you have not been paying attention, Google is on a huge mobile push. From Places to having live workshops in selected cities targeted at local businesses to get online. Recently, they announced that changes have been made since last year to limit ad-serving to landing pages with heavy flash content. Now, they will take into account whether your landing page or web site has been optimized for mobile or not. In a nutshell, if your page is mobile optimized, your ads will perform better on AdWords and they will… …generally drive more mobile traffic at a lower cost Looks a lot like a not so subtle ‘bribe’ to get you to optimize your site for mobile devices. How to you get a mobile optimized landing page? Google does provide a free mobile site creator. Great, easy to use tool. Personally, I like to have things all managed neatly under WordPress. For several reasons: So you don’t have to remember where or what tool you published content with Mess with Google Accounts and access control Not to have to worry about technical CNAME stuff just to have the mobile page under your own domain You or your staff are familiar

Memories and Thanks

Apple timeline

This would not be a tech blog if I didn’t at least acknowledge and pay tribute to Steve Jobs. This is going to be simple. There’s no “what we can learn from Steve” as we all know there’s plenty we can learn. Just somehow lots of memories. I keep thinking back to how the very first computer I ever touched was an Apple. We didn’t call it cool names like ‘Mac’ back then. It was Apple or Macintosh. Thank you Mr. Jobs. For introducing me to computing and taking all of us on such an unbelievable ride. May you rest in peace. via

Reduce Vulnerability To Spam With These Simple Strategies

By Lynette · Comments (1)

Spam

It is unfortunate we have to deal with spam daily. They are everywhere too, from email to blogs, social networks to faxes. Oh yes, we receive spam faxes. Those irk me most even though the volume is low because there are tangible costs involved like ink, toner and paper. Here and now, I’d just like to focus on email spam and a few simple things you can put in place so you aren’t making yourself a beacon for spammers and their detestable bots. Don’t Wear A Target On Your Back Spammers tend to seek common address affiliate@, affiliatemanager@, sales@, paypal@, webmaster@, orders@, editor@, info@ etc. They’ll try sending to these addresses no matter whether the address exists or not. As a matter of fact, you could already be getting spam to these addresses even if you have not set up the account. As a result, you’ll receive spam the moment you create it. It is not just these. Most of us know any dictionary word in an address are already a natural target for spam. Same goes to names. One way you could start clean is to make your address a phrase like AskLynetteChandler, or JustLynette, ReachOutToLynette and so on. Quit Displaying

Why You Want Avoid Windows Web Hosting

By Lynette · Comments (2)

Avoid!

I’m completely flustered so be warned that this is a rant. Having built sites for years, I’ve seen all kinds of web hosting. The most difficult to work with are sites hosted on Windows servers. Let’s get this straight, this is not a Microsoft bashing party. I believe that certain operating systems are best at certain jobs and industries. When it comes to web servers. Linux based servers are the best. It’s not only best because it does the job of a web server really well but also because so many scripts we use and enjoy today are built on foundation software meant to be run on Linux based servers. For example: WordPress aMember As you can imagine, when you try to run these on other operating systems it just is not what it should be. You may be able to get the site up and running sure but you would either lose some great features or run into problems that are difficult, sometimes impossible to work around. Here’s what I mean. We received a work order to clone a WordPress site to another server. Well that’s easy just use BackupBuddy. However, all of that came to a screeching halt because
