How To Setup FeedBurner MyBrand

Last week, we talked about how to move your FeedBurner.com feeds into Google before they flip the switch. We touched on a related FeedBurner feature which is MyBrand.

MyBrand by FeedBurner allows you to have a feed URL that is on your own domain e.g. http://feeds.techbasedmarketing.com Setting up is easy but you must have the ability to edit your domain’s CNAME. Yeah I know it sounds technical but once you see the steps it’s not all that hard. I want to talk a little bit more about this ability to edit CNAME so let’s backup a bit. If you host your blog/site on a shared web host (99%) you are, you may not necessarily have this option. If you have a reseller account on a shared web host, then there is a possibility you will have this ability, depending on your account. The real answer here is, check with your web host. This is usually something that is edited at host level.

If you have a VPS, Dedicated Server or a reseller account with permissions to change the CNAME then follow these directions.

Log in to your Google feedburner account.

Click My Account, on the top and then MyBrand

feedburner-008

Enter the URL you want your feeds to be delivered from e.g. feeds.techbasedmarketing.com

feedburner-009

Take note of the CNAME address. Copy it and set it aside somewhere

feedburner-010

Now, log in to your Web Host Manager. Sorry I use cPanel almost exclusively if you use some other control panel like Plesk do ask your host how to do this. Click DNS Functions.

feedburner-011

Click on Edit DNS Zones

feedburner-012Select the domain you want to work with then click Edit

feedburner-013

If you’ve never done this before, scroll down to “Add New Entries Below this Line”, enter ‘feeds’ in the first box, leave the 2nd box as is, in 3rd field select CNAME and the 4th field enter “da8lg5.feedproxy.ghs.google.com." or whatever is listed in your feedburner MyBrand account. Important. Make sure there is a period at the end of the .com

feedburner-014Click Save and you’re done. It may take a while to resolve, my experience, it’s usually quick.

One last step, you need to redirect/change all your old FeedBurner or WordPress address to http://feeds.yourdomain.com/FeedName

Hey there, Great post, but what if i can’t find the dns functions section in my cpanel? i really want to get my FTA feed “my brand” with feedburner but i can’t find the dns functions.

      Hi N2News, two scenarios.
      1. If you’re on shared hosting and looking in via cpanel, chances are you won’t find it and you’ll probably have to get your host to do this for you.

      2. If you have a reseller account, you must log in via WHM (Web Host Manager) NOT cpanel. If you don’t see “DNS Functions” OR “Edit DNS Zone” in your WHM that means your host has not allowed you permissions to edit those areas and you’ll have to contact your host to do it.

It all depends on your web hosting account. Let’s see if I can get this clearer.

Shared hosting – can’t DIY – contact your host
      Reseller account – depends
      VPS or Dedicated – Yes

      Hope that helps.

      @Rajinap: Thanks!
