Pro-bono Job Can Turn Out To Be Interesting
This year, I volunteered to be a co-leader for the Girl Scouts. I’ve been asked to build our troops a private portal for the leaders to communicate with the parents and also a safe place for parents, leaders and scouts alike to upload and share photos we take through the year.
I’m still chewing on what I should use to build this portal. As you know, being a WordPress buff, my first instinct is to use that and I very well may. But on the other hand I also want this to be a very ‘social’ space. This is actually quite exciting for me because even though I won’t earn any money from this, but it gives me a good chance to exercise my skills and expand my knowledge. In the end, it will serve my clients well. Besides, it is a nice feeling to give back to the community and perhaps strengthen my local presence.
I’ll post here again when I get the site done to report what tools I used and the challenges.
Do You Want A Hands-Free Business?
Then get this guide to help you systemize your business so you'll have more time working on your business.
Hey! I want to make sure you know what you're getting here. In addition to the guide, you will also receive our memo that includes special offers, announcements and of course actionable information.
I’m also doing a site for a non-profit (a local food shelf) and it’s a nice change of pace. I’m using WordPress for simplicity’s sake and so that I can train volunteers on how to maintain it easily and upload their own content.
What I partcularly like is that I have a fair amount of autonomy in how it’s set up and I can experiment in a rather non-judgmental atmosphere. Their main concern as a “client” is a presence that allows them to communicate news and their message….how that’s accomplished is up to me.
It’s nice to hear about other developers who are using their skills in this way!
Good for you Jen. I think it’s important to give back no matter how small. I like working with the girls because I think it’s important to invest and build up the people who will lead us in the future. I’m still chewing on which is the best approach because I am building for two troops and they must have complete privacy due to their ages, plus it must be somewhat interactive with a photo sharing component. Would be easier if it’s just posting content and a calendar. I’m leaning towards WordPress MU.
