If you have not been paying attention, Google is on a huge mobile push. From Places to having live workshops in selected cities targeted at local businesses to get online.
Recently, they announced that changes have been made since last year to limit ad-serving to landing pages with heavy flash content. Now, they will take into account whether your landing page or web site has been optimized for mobile or not.
In a nutshell, if your page is mobile optimized, your ads will perform better on AdWords and they will…
…generally drive more mobile traffic at a lower cost
Looks a lot like a not so subtle ‘bribe’ to get you to optimize your site for mobile devices.
How to you get a mobile optimized landing page? Google does provide a free mobile site creator. Great, easy to use tool.
Personally, I like to have things all managed neatly under WordPress. For several reasons:
- So you don’t have to remember where or what tool you published content with
- Mess with Google Accounts and access control
- Not to have to worry about technical CNAME stuff just to have the mobile page under your own domain
- You or your staff are familiar with WordPress already
- The content is on a site (and database) that you have complete control
