Insecure Items Warning On Your Site?
Yesterday, we talked about getting an SSL cert for your site so that people can go to https:// and the browser will tell them the site is secured, you get the little padlock at the bottom and all that jazz. Here’s something else you should know about putting an SSL on your site. All the pages that are to load in https:// must point to images and files that begin with https:// as well.
Let’s back up a bit. Even though you can, you don’t want all your pages on your site to load with https:// because it takes a lot of thinking and number crunching, you’ll run through your bandwidth and resources quickly. So you’d only link or use https:// on pages you want to be secure, like your affiliate sign up page and your shopping cart pages.
On those pages, maybe you have a header image. When referencing the header image in your HTML code, it must also begin with https:// if it still points to http://yoursite.com/image.jpg then visitors will get a warning about secure and insecure warning on your page. Thankfully the issue is easily resolved. Just replace http:// with https:// where your images appears. This applies to any download file as well.
