Hey, It’s Powered By WordPress

Help DeskThis week Lisa asks…

I would like to start a blogg/web site for affililate marketing. WordPress is what i would like to use but its so confusing what’s the best way to learn how to do this and have a web site look….any free tuts i dont even mind paying for something if its a good video…..Iam a newbbie….ps please excuse the mis spellings I have to get my son to bed its way past bed time…thanks Lisa

A: Hey Lisa.

Learning to use or set up any system to us is always confusing. I’m not sure which area you’re stuck with. Is it setting up? Themes and templates or just using WordPress?

If it is the setting up part and your web host supports Fantastico (an automatic installer), use it. It is probably the easiest (and fastest) way to get things started. Here’s a quick demo installing WordPress with Fantastico.

If you’re having trouble using WordPress, I’ve personally found their Codex to be helpful. YouTube is also fast becoming a super storehouse of great free video tutorials.

typingAn alternative to trying to piece together bits and pieces of information from all over the Internet is to get into BloggingStarterPack. It has take-you-by-the-hand videos from installation right up to setup and some theme tweaking.

But… you mentioned wanting a web site look and feel. This is very do-able with WordPress but you’d have to either

  1. Start with a good base theme and then tweak it – one that you like and fits a ‘website look’ or,
  2. Learn how to heavily customize a theme.

If you’re new to HTML and building websites in general I highly recommend going with the first option. WordPress themes while very flexible can be quite technical. In fact, to be a really good theme designer (in my opinion) you should have some if not a good grasp of PHP.

Some themes that I use and like are:

StudioPress

iTheme’s Builder Theme

MarketerCMS

Your next question to me would likely be which theme is ‘best’. Well, over the years I’ve found that ‘best’ is relative. It really depends on what you want to do and how proficient you are with WordPress, CSS and HTML. Even though the theme designers will always say you don’t need to know HTML and that is true to a certain point, it never hurts if you know or possess these skills. It makes the overall process easier.

Hi. I agree you. If you are starting on website business and don’t have so much experience editing HTML code nor PHP, I recommend you to start with one CMS (Content Management System). That way you just have to worry about your content and the things you want to publish in your site. One of the most popular CMS is WordPress.

Now, with that in mind, you have to look for your web hosting company. There are free and paid host plans. I advise you to start with a free plan and then upgrade to a paid plan when you get more experienced.

For hosting companies I can recommend you http://www.230mb.com They have a free hosting plan with a fanstastico-like installer that will allow you to get your wordpress site running very quick.

    These are my 2 cents.

    Good luck.

Hello Moon, It is interesting your suggestion of a free host. I think free hosts are OK for personal sites or blogs. But if you’re serious about making any kind of money even if it’s just enough to support your gourmet coffee habit every month, I highly recommend going for paid hosting.

It is more professional and very often free hosts have some kind of condition attached. They could be allowing ads on your blog/site or they could be holding your website content or domain ‘hostage’. Not saying your recommendation does. Just in general.

Besides, hosting is so very inexpensive these days. Might as well start it right from the beginning.

Fantastico makes it really easy to set up wordpress. I am new to blogging, but was able to set up a basic template in a few minutes. What would be helpful is a tutorial on how to modify the basic template to make it look more professional.
