Free & Speedy Video Screen Capture – It’s Not CamStudio

It’s Jing! Kinda odd/quirky name but Jing is the latest to join the most used applications on my computer. Jing does static screen capture and screen video. You can save the recording to your computer or click one button to have it uploaded to Screencast.com – TechSmith’s video hosting service.

Jing is free and you get a basic account at Screencast.com free – very smart way to build usage/trial and a list of prospects! Back to the topic.

What I like about Jing:

  • It’s fast. Snap/record and upload – great for blogs, or passing on instructions. I used it to explain something to my partner on a site redesign. It’s so seamless and no FTPing.
  • It’s free
  • It does the job beautifully, and the quality is good
  • It also works on the Mac! Yay!

Why I’ll still use Camtasia for the videos that matter:

  • I like the screen draw feature. Using a tablet, I can quickly highlight parts of the screen or write on it.
  • I can pan and zoom the camera.
  • I can edit and create other formats like iPod ready files for those who would like to take the videos to go.
  • I can do a lot of fancy post production.
  • A bunch of other things that make Camtasia nice.

Thanks to Daniel from TechSmith who alerted me to JingProject.

Neat, thanks for passing along Lynette. Does it do audio too?

Glad you find Jing helpful, Lynette! And I think you’re spot on in identifying what makes Jing and Camtasia Studio unique.
