Forums Are Dead?

You tell meMy wonderful friend and partner Kelly McCausey has killed off a pretty big forum over at MomsTalkNetwork. In her Twitter, she was asking for opinions if this should be killed or not and before you know it, it’s gone!

MomsTalkNetwork is one I had helped the founding owners Alice Seba and Mila Sidman set up. In a way it’s kinda sad for me but it’s never quite been a home for me. So, I do breathe a sigh of relief – one less distraction.

Kelly Twittered ” We’d rather comment on each others blogs and twitter than post on a mom forum” . I think that is so true. Social networks really have changed the scene of ‘networking’.

Now, I’m not saying forums don’t have a place at all. I still run a private and reasonably active forum for a small group of women (and a handful of men). The forum has nothing to do with Internet marketing or business. But I doubt that forum will go away in the near future simply because our members are not the social network type and we have members all around the world. So a forum makes sense. Also, they actually have a life outside of the Internet – imagine that!

I’d like to know your thoughts on this. What do you prefer? Do you think forums are dying for certain groups?

I sure hope forums won’t soon be dead Lynette! I don’t have the time for things like Twitter and a lot of the social networking. While I understand that they do hold some value – maybe 🙂 – I can’t work on their schedule as opposed to mine. And I think that’s my biggest issue with social networking. . .you have be constantly involved to follow other people’s Twitters, see what’s hot in Digg, Reddit and Technorati. If you ‘slack off’ for a few hours – or heaven forbid a whole day – you may ‘miss’ something. It’s just easier to stick to my own schedule with forums. But then again, I don’t have ADD and I’m not 20-something anymore! 🙂

Hey Stephanie, You probably don’t have anything to worry about 🙂

I like forums too. I think eventually after people get tired of staying so in tuned with each other every second of the day they will start to want more space and return to the ‘old’ way of doing things. Probably won’t come soon because everyone is so hyped up about live and up to date social networks now.

But bottom line – it depends on your market and the seasons.
