Checking Your Site On Multiple Browsers With Virtual PC

It is always frustrating – and often embararssing – when your beautifully designed site totally breaks down when viewed on a different browser. There are free tools like BrowserShots but they take time. This can be a problem when you want to check if your efforts to correct to problem has worked or not. A great example is between IE6 and IE7 itself the difference is huge.

I have IE7 and Firefox 3 but know testing in IE6 and FF 2 is a must. My solution – use Virtual PC. Virtual PC is like having a PC inside your PC. You can launch any version operating system XP or even Vista inside Virtual PC and install different versions of browsers.

Virtual PC is not free, but Microsoft has been good enough to release Virtual PC 2004 for free. Download it here. After you install VPC grab the virtual package of Windows XP with IE6 here.

Follow instructions to install it.

When you run virtual PC, select this virtual machine and click start. VPC will ‘boot’ this virtual computer in a window it’s pretty cool really. You can install programs including old firefoxes or any other browser here and review your site through it. Saved me lots of headaches.

    Lynette,
thanks for the reminder to test in older versions of browsers, too.
Do you have an indication of how many (percentage) users still older versions and how also how fast users adopt to new versions? (would make a good blog post in itself) I remember getting the occasional popup in my firefox to upgrade to the latest version (and finally did to 3 something a few weeks ago).
