Automatic Plugin Upgrade Failure Solution

Help DeskSo! Have you tested out the new WordPress 2.5 yet? Lots of cool stuff. As you probably already know or heard from the grape vines, the interface is totally re-worked. It’ll take some getting used to for sure. Some good some bad of course, but I’ll probably revisit that later.

Right now, I just wanted to share this important thing I found out… before I forget that is.

WordPress 2.5 comes with some mighty cool features. One which I am uber happy about is the automatic plugin upgrade. As one who maintains blogs WordPress sites for others, upgrading plugins manually is a major PITB.

Imagine my disappointment when I tried to do the automatic upgrade but couldn’t. This crazy error came up

Cannot redeclare pclziputilpathreduction()

Ugh! So maybe it was a server problem I figured. But quickly found out there is a conflict with the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin (this is the one that upgrades your WordPress – not the plugins) with one click. So here’s what I did.

  1. Temporarily disabled the WPAU plugin
  2. Upgraded all the plugins automatically including WPAU
  3. Turned WPAU back on and voila! Plugin upgrades worked like a charm.

I believe WPAU already released a fix for this so if you’re running the latest version you may not run into this problem. In case you do… here’s your possible solution.
