You hear it all the time.
"I’m not technical"
It has become sorta hip (it seems to me) to be ‘not technical’. Like a badge that says, "Hey, I’m not a geek, I’m just like everyone else". In the Internet Marketing community, this has become a selling point. I totally understand that. After all, who wants to buy something that is ‘technical’? It has so many negative connotations. Even I don’t want to buy something technical = a lot of work.
That’s not my gripe seriously. What saddens me, is when I hear smart, knowledgeable, capable women hide their geekiness by telling themselves and others that they aren’t ‘technical’. Never mind they may work in tech support, taken a programming course years ago or learnt to build a good old fashioned HTML web site all by themselves.
Maybe it’s because the word can mean so many things. I mean what’s technical to my developer could be like rocket science to me. What’s technical to you may be simple for me. To make it worse, there are all kinds of technical.
For example, I don’t understand computer hardware very well, I don’t consider myself a Javascript/ASP/Windows guru. Yes, I do know more about it than some, but it is not possible for one single person to be proficient in all things technical.
So… why don’t more women admit to themselves they are somewhat or very geeky? Girlfriend, if you are the designated computer fixer in your household you are the techie. Go ahead, give yourself some credit.

I consider myself half and half. I can do more if I just focused but w/so many kids. It is hard to find the time to learn what I want to learn.
In the near future, I will probably go pro.

I am absolutely technical and proud of it! I’m a geek and I wear that badge like a badge of honor! 🙂
My husband is a self-professed “computer dummy” and he also seems proud of that label and always tells everyone that I’m the computer nerd of the family. He seems as proud of it as I am.
The only problem? Whenever anyone, even distant friends and family, have an issue with their computer….I get the phone calls! Sometimes that’s not so fun. But I love messing with computers, learning programming languages, installing scripts and software. It’s fun and I think I’m sort of good at it!

You are absolutely right…A lot of women say that…Lot more than men…I think for some it stems from the fear that they don’t know enough…Women in general are much eager and ready to accept what they don’t know…I was actually a programmer in my previous life…I found that men are very confident about their technical abilities, if they know much less than the woman in the next seat.

Hey Sandy, LOL I know exactly what you’re saying there about men being ‘confident’ in their abilities even though the woman next to him probably has more knowledge but the sad part is that woman next to him will down play her abilities.

You know it’s all relative. When I tell people I’m “not technical”, I mean that I don’t know how to get the pictures I’ve taken off my Blackberry. Or I don’t know how to do graphic design or image editing etc.
But people in the offline world laugh at me when I say I’m not techie.
I know quite a bit of html code and can tweak a WordPress blog a little and am beginning to understand ftp a little and stuff… and I run an online business.
