Don’t Believe That Feed Subcriber Count

dollar bill

Whoa! While reading a blog somewhere recently – sorry! I cannot remember which blog this was or I’d link to it – it came to my attention a lot of things can be bought for a price. The article was talking about a company paying people to subscribe to their RSS feed. Don’t ask how they would verify that because I don’t know how they can reliably do that.

Why do this? So that they can display that cool chicklet to say they have a ton of RSS feed subscribers and look like they are one of those hot shot blogs.

Some people are already talking about being paid for Tweets on Twitter. A guy is also trying to sell his Facebook profile on eBay complete with friends list and followers. Kinda crazy.

My own take away – don’t trust those RSS subscriber counts you see on other people’s blog. They may be inflated. Don’t focus on the numbers we have but how we serve those we do have. Thoughts?

That’s hilarious. You sure can buy popularity on the next, can’t you? I hope these people feel all warm and fuzzy inside with their fake friends. A few years ago, it was people faking their Alexa rankings, now they need fake people who like their blogs.

The idea of making money out of anything is viral. It may seems funny now, but it could become a trend in the future.. BTW have you heard of a man who sells his twitter account for $500?

I don’t know Nick, if I were one of the Twitter followers or facebook friends of these guys. I might feel betrayed. But Twitter is easy. You can just unfollow. Furthermore Twitter is something that is hard to mimic.

I guess it depends what you do with that Twitter account. Not having the details. If that Twitter account is used to update people about a focused topic, then… there is a possibility this buying/selling works. But selling your own personal Twitter stream?… somewhat questionable.

I agree – focus on the people – not the list.
I think far too many marketers don’t really know the people on their list and could maximize their sales by learning more about them, and being more personal.

They could then move to bigger ticket items rather than staying with small priced quick sales.

Some people don’t know yet or may never know that quantity is not quality! What’s the point of having ‘tons’ of twitter followers if you can never keep up with them as people.
