404 Page Strategy

Bet you think I’m going to tell you about some fancy 404 page tactic that would help you generate sales, traffic and fill in the blanks with whatever you want. I’m going to have to disappoint you but promise it’ll be worth your while.

Who says you gotta be all serious with your 404 pages? Give your readers a laugh and I’m sure you’ll generate more interest to actually find the rest of your content than a stoic, get-the-job-done page. Check this out. Courtesy of Ziff.Net – too bad there’s no other content on that page – or at least I can’t find it.

There’s actually more on the page itself. The screenshot is only a small part of it.

How do they create those sassy pages? Perhaps the link you added will disclose it. I’ll click to see what’s there.

Meanwhile, Entrepreneur Magazine’s February issue includes an article about 404 pages. The subtitle states, “Find new customers by turning your error page into a marketing message.”

I plan to review the article for potential discussion on my blog.

Hi there. It’s actually quite easy. I’ll put up a quick how-to later. You can also do quick search for “custom 404” page.

And you’re right a 404 page is often overlooked prime real estate. Despite knowing it for years I’m guilty of neglecting them on several my sites. This is actually a great reminder to go back and do it and maybe a good idea to allow some personality to show through.
