Best Way To Present Video Online
Many months ago, I did a similar post about this. Back then, I mistakenly assumed WMV could be the popular format. But later, changed my mind in favor of MP4. I am still convinced of MP4 especially when it’s Google video’s preferred format, plus the video iPod factor. Too many portable video devices including phones can play MP4. So, when I came across Jon Udell’s post
about screencast video formats, I immediately thought MP4, like his readers did. Ok let me give you a little background. Jon Udell creates screencasts regularly which is displayed on the website in Flash format and I think it’s the right format to use. But a reader who follows his blog through RSS on his PocketPC, requested him to make it in another format other than flash. This way he could simply play the screencast while on the road instead of having to wait to get back to the office (or home) and then
having to filter his way through the blog to search for the video. You know, it’s an excellent point and it’s something I commented about in March this year. Reading his post and comments received, I’m rather excited I haven’t been far off in my predictions. Although… watching screencasts on a small screen is not exactly ideal don’t you think?;-)

I believe WMV is the future. Wmv can be compressed way more that the other formats. I can hold entire movie collections on my digital devices using wmv.
I just seen a new website only using wmv its called auctionplayer.com You add streaming videos to your ebay listings.

Hi Jim, thanks for your input. Looking back on my post, I really should’ve chosen a better title. It should be the best way to distribute mobile video.
Although I agree very much with the compression of WMV, its very small and still good quality but the problem is, it won’t play on a lot of mobile devices. On top of that, WMV is a pain to play for non Windows computers. For presenting on a web page, I think flash is still best.
Incidently, we also highlighted AuctionPlayer.com in an earlier post. Pretty cool though I wished they used flash – I really hate having to wait for Windows Media Player to load.
