Clipping The Web

On Wednesday, I shared about Evernote, a software that saves bits and pieces of information. I also shared that while it is an excellent piece of software, I’m not able to use it to it’s full potential because it’s Windows only. I had to find something that would allow me to fluidly save information from my PowerBook as well the desktop PC. Would that be a tall order?
Well, it usually is, many Windows developers aren’t crazy about creating a Mac version and vice versa. So my options quickly moved to the Web. See, this is prove applications are moving online but that’s another conversation. What I found are two very cool software. ClipMarks and TiddlyWiki.
ClipMarks is a free online clip marking service. It works much like Evernote, you can literally clip stuff you find on the Web, tag them add notes etc. I like it generally and have started moving some of my Evernote clips there but I have one gripe. Unlike Evernote, I cannot freely select the items I want to clip. Well you can but it will try to guess what you want and clip those blocks for you. Sometimes you can do single paragraphs, sometimes you can’t and rarely can you select just one sentence to clip. Still, for free and since it works on all platforms, it will have to do or does it? Besides, Clipmarks can’t save notes I create from scratch. Also, although I’m almost always wired there are times during travels I’m not and if I can’t get online to do simple things like these huge withdrawal symptoms follow… hmmm. Not good. What to do what to do?
Enter TiddlyWiki. I really like this because it’s only one file! I can put it on a USB flash drive, carry it everywhere and because it’s a HTML file it can be used on any computer. Even one I borrow from my friend if I can’t get to my computer. TiddlyWiki is quite amazing for what it is and it takes a while to wrap your head around software contained in one HTML file, but you’ll get it and when you do, whoo hoo! It’s awesome for saving all my notes, my thoughts, articles, URLs and I’ve even started to ‘clip’ the web with it.
Even though it’s not meant to be a web clipping software but you can use it as such. The only problem is, copying and pasting may take more than one action. So far, this is the one I use most because it satisfies all my criteria. I save the file into my file server allowing me to access the application from anywhere in and around my house. When I travel, I can just pop the file into my USB flash drive and off I go. Very neat. I’m ordering a new, bigger USB flash drive 🙂
