Flash And Mobile Devices
Sometime last year, I made a post about the delivery formats for screencasts and video. In the short 9 months, things have changed (but of course) and video has changed even faster! Not long after that the iPod video was released, Google video caught on, cell phones are now more and more video-centric, handhelds are more powerful and more PSP (Playstation Portable) owners are downloading and watching videos.
So it is a good time to update my thoughts on this, especially after Bina asked a question about flash on PDAs. To answer her question, yes, people can get flash on their PDA’s and other mobile devices but intergration especially on cell phones is somewhat limited. What is more interesting is how MP4 at the time of writing seem to be a better format for distributing videos to mobile users.
So which will triumph? Contrary to my earlier post, WMV is out, MP4 is in. Flash? I don’t know at this point, but 9 months down the road I could be back with more.
P/S: I also don’t think screencasts will work well for tiny screens like cell phones though. Even if you could make them small and still legible, I doubt anyone would want to watch hours worth of screencasts on their mobile device. Movies are different where you don’t need to concentrate on one single spot. But this is just a hunch.
