Internet Does Not Limit Social Interaction?
What do you think? I think people are rather divided about this. Those who resist it or think the Internet is an uncessary evil will say it reduces our social capabilities and demolishes community as we know it. Others would say it’s the best thing for mankind to stay in touch. A survey published by Pew Internet & American Life Project apparently proves assumptions that the Internet limits social interaction wrong.
Key notes of interest from the report:
People who email the vast majority (80%–100%) of their core ties weekly are in
phone contact with 25% more of their core ties than non-emailers. Moreover,
those who email the vast majority of their significant ties weekly are in phone
contact with twice as many of their significant ties than non-emailers.People use the internet to put their social networks into motion when
they need help with important issues in their lives.About 60 million Americans say the internet has played an important or
crucial role in helping them deal with at least one major life decision in
the past two years. At major moments, some people say the internet helps them connect with
other people and experts who help them make choices. Others say that
the web helps them get information and compare options as they face
decisions.
If you asked me, as someone who left behind friends and family to live in a strange place I personally think the Internet is awesome for my social well being. If it were not for the Internet I would not be able to keep in touch with my family, meet other people who are in the same boat as myself and create our own little support system if you will.
But look really close into the report especially the last three key notes highlighted above – A lot of people look to the Internet be it friends they know or friends they met online for support and advise, something that’s long known among savvy Internet marketers. This is important to remember when creating content, newsletters and blogging for your business.
