Battling Comment Spam

Lately I’ve been receiving a rash of comment spam. It’s nothing new but there has been a sudden influx – it’s likely due to a few new software being released and for reasons of not perpetuating it will not reveal the software name(s) here. Actually when I saw the sales letter of that software, I got sick to my stomach with disgust. Not only is it annoying but the practice is a very short term approach. Besides, the people who sold you the software probably didn’t tell you many popular blogging software has a special (no follow) tag to all links in comments. That has been in place for months now… sorry to say, you got ripped off. This is really an example of not using technology properly. Yes, you can disable the tag but most bloggers especially the new ones won’t be inclined to.

Anyway, I installed this excellent WordPress plugin Spam Karma 2.0 and I tell you this thing is amazing. In two days it’s accurately caught 49 spam comments. In short, as per my previous entry, I don’t mind linking to people. I do it – a lot- in my blog if you haven’t already noticed but please, give me good reason to allow you to keep your links on my blog. I love comments, to hear what you think, your thoughts this is one of the joys of blogging.

Most of my legitimate commenters are awesome. They contribute and engage in the discussion. In that case I have no problems linking to you. Anyway… enough griping. To all commenters, even though Spam Karma catches a lot of spam for me, I still review the list of what it catches so I don’t miss an important comment from you which I love getting. Spam Karma has been accurate so far so it shouldn’t be an issue. Also, if you’re a previously approved commenter, you won’t have this problem at all because you’re in my ‘white list’ if you can call it that. If you’re still having problems, please send me an email.
