Is RSS Worth It?

Well… if you only read the first sentence of this article on Clickz.com you’d say no but then you’d be missing out on the bigger picture (and story behind it). Yes, while it seems by this research conducted by Forrester Research, only 2% of online adults in US use RSS and the numbers are equally small for teens what you should note are these interesting points.

Forrester Research Analyst Charlene Li notes the RSS user numbers don’t include users who unknowingly use RSS, such as via a portal like My Yahoo! for example

This could indicate the actual numbers are larger

Non-RSS users spent an average $333 online over the past three months, while RSS users spent $465 in the same period

Veerrryy interesting. These people are bigger spenders and if you read the article, right above that it says RSS users tend to compare and research more about their product before a purchase so you know what that means – give them better quality content and information. I think reviews will work very well here.

Lastly, the article says

Although a scant few currently use RSS, the Forrester report argues marketers should care about RSS; RSS users represent tomorrow’s customers. Marketers should begin testing this new application; while current RSS use is small, both risk and cost are relatively low, the report said.

This is one of the few chances you have to get in while it’s young. Even now, some people are saying it’s ‘too late’. I don’t think so. By the percentage in this report it clearly shows theres a LOT of room left… if you do it now 🙂
