Lynn Terry Discloses What And How She Uses Technology

When Lynn Terry offered her followers the fantastic opportunity to do an interview with her, you bet I jumped at it. If you don’t know Lynn already she’s a uber smart, super affiliate and internet marketer with real staying power –  she’s been in Internet and Affiliate Marketing for 11 years at the time of writing. Needless to say, I thoroughly respect and value her thoughts.

Me being the tech gal, I just couldn’t resist finding out what Lynn thinks about technology in her business, personal tech and some non-techie stuff. Here are her answers to my burning questions which I found insightful. Enjoy!

Q: How do you decide what technologies you will implement in your business and when?

Great question. I’m never one to jump on a trend, or implement certain technology or strategies on a whim. Things I’ve added to my business over the years such as webinars, podcasts, videos, etc have each been a specific effort to increase my reach.

For the most part, new tech is simply a new way to share my content. I often re-purpose text content into audio, video, or webinar events.

The key is to make smart decisions about your business model. You want to go where your market is. If your market is on iTunes, start a podcast. If your market is on Facebook, create an active Facebook Page. If your market is on YouTube, create videos.

For me the decisions are always more about serving my market than anything else.

Let’s say you have an affiliate site for bowling equipment. Live webinars probably wouldn’t interest your market. A product-based site, video reviews and an engaging Facebook Page would work best in this niche.

Q: Lynn, you own an iPad and a smartphone. In what way have these gadgets changed the way you work if at all?

That’s right. I have the original iPad and a Motorola Droid X. I love how convenient they are, especially when I’m on the go. On my last trip to Australia, I only took my iPad – no need to tote a heavy laptop. The great thing about the iPad is the super long battery life, so it’s great for long flights and being out all day.

I’ve found that I tend to use my smart phone much more than the iPad though. It’s just more convenient, and fits in my back pocket.

Going mobile was the best thing I have ever done in my business. I rarely work in the office anymore since I can now manage most of my business from the smaller gadgets. I’m also more productive during what would normally be “dead time” – waiting at the dentist, waiting for a flight, etc. It’s amazing what you can get done when you work in those little spaces of time throughout the day.

Q: What are your 3 most favorite apps for business?

I love Evernote. Specifically because it’s cross platform and synced across my devices – PC, Macbook, Droid, iPad, etc. It’s very handy for keeping running task lists, making notes or jotting down ideas, and of course it does tons more…

The WordPress app is great for creating blog post drafts on the go, or keeping up with incoming blog comments.

I really like the Dragon Dictation app as well, and have it installed on my iPad. Great for recording articles, blog posts, task lists or making notes for a product I’m working on.

The latest software I’ve installed and am using a lot is Things for Mac. It’s a task list manager that lets you organize projects and schedule your tasks. I love it best for it’s simplicity. They also have an iPad app that will sync with the software on your Mac.

That was four, but I really do have to add yet another one… the Kindle app rocks! Like Evernote it’s cross platform and syncs across devices. So if I’m reading on my iPad, I can grab my Droid and pick right up where I left off. Sweet!

Q: Work flow and process has been on my mind a lot lately. Would you care to share what your work flow is like? For example. Do you plan out what you will write/do for the month, enter them into a project management system and start doling out tasks? Do you have a simple paper to do list you work out from on a week to week basis or something else?

It’s actually been on my mind as well. I’ve made great efforts to plan things out in advance, but that doesn’t always work. Not in a niche where there are constantly hot topics that have the market’s interest, at least. In other niches I work in, it’s easy to set up emails and blog posts in advance and have them publish on a schedule.

With the work I do in the Internet Marketing space though, I am more likely to go with the flow. I like to talk about what’s going on in the industry, and answer the questions that come up that week.

A recent example is an email I received from a new reader. I didn’t have anything on the schedule to blog about that day, so I repurposed the email into this post: online jobs work from home and then emailed him the link in my reply.

I’ll do a topical series sometimes, which is fun and does require more advanced planning. But more often than not I simply fly by the seat of my pants – and have a great time doing it that way. 😉

Q: When you need an opinion, ideas or simply a listening ear regarding your business, who do you call?

This may shock you, but the answer is: my mother!

I have a lot of friends and peers in my inner circle that I speak with as well, depending on the matter at hand, but I can always count on my mom to shoot straight with me and have my best interests in mind. Not only does she know me better than anyone else, she is also unbiased and objective. I particularly like her non-internet-marketing viewpoints, or how things look to “real people”.

Q: How do you come up with those great questions that generate lots of reaction on Facebook?

LOL – it took me a long time to adopt Facebook. But now… I love it!

Facebook is such a great way to interact with your market and your peers. Unlike Twitter, conversations can easily be followed which means a lot more engagement.

I tend to post on Facebook the same way I talk in person. I like to keep it real, and be myself. The feedback there is invaluable. I love to ask questions, and then use their answers as inspiration for new blog posts.

It’s funny – some things get a great response, while others get totally ignored. I make note of both, and use that to serve up more of what they love.

This is a great interview. All these new gadgets to help out your business have me fascinated now. It would be great to be on the run and easily work when you are waiting at a dentist office etc.

Hey Dawn it is not only fascinating, you will get used to it – quickly. I was just coming in here to add that like Lynn, I LOVE Evernote. I’ve written about it so often on this blog and I use it mostly with my phone. I do have an Android tablet and again like Lynn, I’ve found I’m using the phone more when I’m out in town.

It’s just that the phone is smaller, more handy, easier to manage. While the tablet I would use for longer trips.

Last week I found something wrong with my phone and oh! I felt lost and completely naked without it. While I don’t work so much on the phone, I can’t anyway because of what I do.

However I use it a lot to catch up on RSS feeds. I used to have tons and tons of feeds that I never read in months but now I get to read them which translates to content ideas, commenting and other related actions.

    Lynnette,

Great interview. I love how you jumped in to reply to Lynn right away from that Facebook conversation. It’s that kind of action taking and identifying what will “serve your market” that I really admire in both you and Lynn. Thank you. I enjoy hearing Lynn’s wisdom and tips that she shares so readily and I loved what she shared about her Mom!

    Best,
    Mary

    Hi all,
I just visited Lynn’s site and found a wonderful email marketing course there (OK, nothing really techy, but involving a little technology).
Anyway, wonderful content – some free pdfs as well – good tips and advice.

    Lynette,
thanks for providing this interesting interview – always good to see how the ‘Gurus’ streamline their work and get the most out of the day.
