WordPress Plugins: 15 Rarely Used Gems
Last week, my friend Nicole Dean graciously included me in her Expert Briefs where she asked top marketers what WordPress plugins they use and like. In that list, I listed:
- List Authors Plus
- Syntax Highlighter and Code Prettifier Plugin for WordPress
- WP Mobile Edition
- Syntax Highlighter and Code Prettifier Plugin for WordPress
- Header-Footer
- RunPHP, PHPExec, PHP Execution
- ThemePerPost
You can read all about why I chose those over at Nicole’s blog. Before you head that way you might also want to see the list below of other rarely used WordPress Plugin gems I use. These didn’t make it into the list I gave Nicole in consideration of the audience and also length of my response.
Widget Logic – You can customize which widgets are displayed on which pages, categories or posts. This makes it great for membership sites. For example I use it on TechBasedTraining (and other sites) to display members’ links only to those who are logged in.
WP Mail From – If you allow people to register themselves or you have ‘members’ in your WordPress powered site you may notice that WordPress sends transactional emails like registration information and password reminders from an email address like wordpress@yoursite.com this allows you to change that From name and email address. We use this on some membership sites to reflect our membership site name and also use the support desk email instead of wordpress@ which goes into a blackhole.
Post/Page Headers – While Header-Footer is an excellent plugin, the problem with adding Javascript or CSS code there is the code is loaded for ALL the pages through your site. This is not a good practice if only one or a handful of pages only use that code. It adds unnecessary weight to your headers and also conflicts with scripts on other pages. Using this plugin you can selectively apply certain CSS or Javascript only to the pages or posts you want to use them on.
p2p Converter – I’ve only had to use this once – but it is certainly a life saver. It will let you convert posts to Pages and Pages to posts.
UserTracker – lets you track when users logged in and what they see. Good for membership sites especially to see which content people go to regularly. This plugin is getting old and it does seem to conflict with SimpleForum but otherwise still works well. I am considering the newer alternative, ThreeWP Login Tracker.
Quizzin – pretty straightforward. Lets you create a quiz. I’ve used it once on an advertising campaign and probably will again.
The following are plugins that I have downloaded and haven’t installed yet. Certainly looks very interesting.
EverPress – lets you automatically post shared notebooks from your Evernote account to WordPress.
Old Post Promoter – randomly chooses old posts and brings them back up to the top.
