More aMember Trouble – A Live Blog Consult
So there I was hanging out in Twitter again. I have a special stream in TweetDeck that searches for anything to do with membership sites and saw this lady tweeting several times over days about the frustrations she’s been having with aMember. So I reached out and asked what kind of issues she was having and quickly found out that it was something way too big to be handled on Twitter alone. Which is why I invited her over here to do a ‘Blog Consult’ and she agreed. Here’s how it works.
I’m posting the details of the issues Alska’s having, asking for pertinent questions. She’ll respond in the comments and we’ll try to solve this whole problem right here. If you work with aMember as well and would like to chime in, feel free to do so. Without further ado. Let me give you a quick outline of the issue.
According to Alska,
To which I’ll ask now for more information.
- Can you please clarify what you mean by regular price and what is renewal price?
- Do you have two products set up for the same item with two different prices? Which is higher?
- Can you explain how people get the renewal price to begin with?
I’m not sure how things are set up in the products but my guess is, if you want people to try the membership, for example: $10 first month and renew at $20 after the first month, then this must be set up in the products from the very beginning.
If you set it up as $10 recurring and later change it, those who have started the subscription (this is true particularly for Paypal) will continue being charged at $10 recurring. To upgrade them to $20/month, you’d have to cancel the old subscription and make them re-subscribe 🙁
Is this pretty much what you wanted to do? Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much for wanting to help! Alex got back to me this morning and went in and fixed it for me.
I had the settings wrong, which I knew. I just couldn’t figure out what settings were the right ones.
I have 2 products. One for new sign-ups, and one for a “special” priced renewal. If members renew before they are expired they get a discount. But all the settings i tried gave the expired members the discount as well. And some members were left without any product selection in the dropdown on their profiles or some active members just had the regular price for sign-ups. I just couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.
But thankfully Alex fixed it!
Thank you again for offering to help. It’s very kind of you!

Thanks so much for coming back to update Alksa. That made sense and I’m glad Alex fixed it for you. In my years of working with aMember sometimes their support answers can be pithy and well, not too helpful. Anyhow all the best on your membership and let me know there’s any way I can help in the future.
