How To Monitor A Domain You’re Eyeing
Have you got your sights set on a domain that you want but is taken? There are a few ways you can go about this.
- Contact the current registrant to ask if they’d be willing to sell. This would usually mean you would be prepared to fork out a nice bit of cash.
- If you don’t have the outlay you can try back ordering the domain with your favorite domain name registrar.
- Another way is to sign up for a domain monitoring service.
A domain monitoring service will email you anytime a change is being made to the domain status, registration date or contact change. This is also a good way to monitor your own domain for unauthorized changes.
Speaking of which, you should always ‘lock’ your domain so nobody can make changes but you. Still, I’ve recently had a friend report strange things happening to her domain so using a monitoring service is like having some sort of 2nd layer check.
You can get this service free from DomainTools.com – they also have a bunch of domain related services that are super cool to check up on a web site like Domain history, great to check a site you are thinking of buying. Some of their services are paid and some free.

@Christie, I love DomainTools and use it every single week especially this week since I’m moving servers and need to do a lot of checks whether the site has resolved or not. I also prefer to use their Whois lookup compared to others because theirs give me so much info. I’ve got this added to my Firefox so I can search directly from the browser.
