Plucking Up My Courage

I’m currently reading The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow by John C. Maxwell. This book advises you to read only one chapter a day. They chapters are short but so powerful. Right now, I’m at leadership quality #5 which is ‘Courage’.

In front of each chapter, there are quotes from famous (and not so famous) people. Every single one of them are good and every single one of them inspired me each day but somehow, today’s really resonated with me.

“Courage is fear that has said its prayers” – Karl Barth, Swiss Theologian

This hit home. Maybe it’s because someone asked me a question yesterday involving my business that I consistently put off. The question was, if there was a TV publicity opportunity, would I be willing to go for it? If you’ve read my confession just two short weeks ago you’ll appreciate why I’m absolutely terrified. Even as I sit and think about the mere possibility of it my heart is terror stricken to the point I can almost cry. And nothing has even happened yet!

Yet, everyone of us needs to stretch and I know in my heart this is one area I must “Feel the fear and do it anyway” – Great book by the way. So, today I am emailing my publicity representative to tell her go ahead and respond to all media opportunities.

What about you? How are you doing in the courage department? If you have no problems with being courageous how about sharing a hint or two?

No hints here! Just thinking the same thoughts this morning in the shower. If I took action on all of the things that I found terrifying where would I be today? I started thinking about the action that I AM taking today and wondered how my life would have been different if I had done these things just 10 short years ago.

I suppose I’m getting to an age where mortality is staring me in the face and I know that the only thing I’ll regret later are the things I didn’t try now. And, since nothing is really stopping me except fear, I think I’ll say my prayers 🙂

Hi Gail, indeed, I wondered the same thing myself. How much farther along we would be if we just plucked up the courage. But on the other hand, there’s not much use to sit on that. I do feel some twinge of regret but it’s time to move forward. You know, something happened this week that reminded me how little time we all have I’ve always told my friends, how do I know today is not my last day? I don’t. So I’m going to live like I am dying.

My greatest fear is succumbing to my fear…..so, I feel the fear and do it anyway….Moreover, if your comfortable then you are not growing. Hence, get comfortable with being uncomfortable…..And I am uncomfortable all of the time. But, I feel alive, well and adventurous!!!!!!!
