Oh Pinterest. How it captivates us. I think it is the perfect exemplar how visual most humans are. As a blogger or website owner, you might want to take advantage of the traffic you could be getting from Pinterest. You can roll your eyes – as I did – but when I saw how Pinterest suddenly became a top referrer for one of my sites, you bet I sat up and paid attention. But there is a challenge. Getting those graphics created especially if you lack creativity (like me) and really wouldn’t like to fork out hundreds of dollars for PhotoShop.
In the video below, I’ll guide you through the steps for creating pin-worthy graphic from scratch using Pixlr, a free online tool. This tutorial is about 18 minutes long and is packed with tips especially if you are new to graphic creation.

FYI – you can certainly download GIMP which I also highly recommend. Like any professional grade image manipulation software though it’s a huge program. That’s why I love using Pixlr for Pinterest graphics. Since it is online, it means I can access it on any computer with an Internet connection. It also has mobile apps which I must admit I’ve not used for this purpose but is nice to know.

GREAT tutorial Lynette – thanks! I’ve seen Pixlr before, but never bothered to dig in. I own PhotoPlus, which is a nice little image editor (less powerful than PhotoShop, but also less expensive and easier to use). After seeing what you can do in Pixlr, I won’t be opening PhotoPlus much anymore! Thanks!!

Thanks for the templates and the tutorial, Lynette. Why or where would you use a pxd file versus jpg or png?
I am unable to open the template file I downloaded from you. Is it just me or is there a problem with it? I get a message that says the compressed file is invalid.
SuzanneFaris are you opening it on Pixlr.com or using another tool? If you try to use it in Photoshop or any other image editor tool you would run into an error. Let me know what you’re using to open the files.
LChandler SuzanneFaris I was trying to open it in Photoshop Elements. I guess that must be the problem.
LChandler Well, I just tried to open the pixlrpinterest.zip file in pixlr and it still doesn’t work. I tried to unzip the file and I get an error message: Express zip could not open this archive. … maybe corrupted.
SuzanneFaris Hmmm what operating system are you using? But yes, you must unzip it first then open using Pixlr.com because there are like 7 different templates inside.
SuzanneFaris Sorry about that. I may consider porting them to Photoshop later if there is demand 🙂

SuzanneFaris That is strange. Anyhow I just re-uploaded the file, maybe that might work for you. It is about 4.5/4.6 MB large so if your download is different size than that it probably didn’t complete probably. Also, try re-downloading with another browser. Sometimes that helps.
SuzanneFaris, PXD files are files for the Pixlr.com editor. The reason I chose to save as PXD is so you can open it in Pixlr and utilize all the layers and turn on or off each layer. Whereas a JPG or PNG is not editable so you cannot easily re-use the templates.
