The Truth About Data Recovery

If you failed to backup your computer and it died. Would you pay big bucks to restore that data from your hard drive? Depending on what you have on it but I’d say if your whole business is on it, you’d probably think seriously about it. Here’s the thing that many don’t realize about data recovery. It’s not guaranteed to restore 100% of your data. Now I must be truthful and qualify that statement. It all depends on how bad a shape your hard drive is in. Sometimes you get lucky and only your computer is fried. Which means you can simply pop the hard drive into an external hard drive enclosure and grab your data from another computer. Yup! I can be that simple. Sometimes we aren’t that lucky and your hard drive may have been damaged. That is not so simple and recovery at that point can get super expensive. If the damage is extensive, you may only get a partial recovery So what’s my point? Backup and backup again. Have at least two sets. One in home – it can be external drive or network attached storage and another set of backups offline like Mozy. It really

This may seem like an elementary issue for some but I know many, especially first time info product marketers tend to wonder and worry about bandwidth issues. Do you upload your product to your own web site or to Amazon S3 or another file hosting service. If the product is only a simple PDF or a collection of documents, audios and PDF’s, I’d host it on my own site. As a matter of fact, I host almost all of my products on the web site itself. In the 4+ years I have marketed video info products, I have never had a problem with bandwidth. Although, if you anticipate huge sales you may have to start re-thinking this. However, for most startups that I know, bandwidth is not an issue. Where it could be an issue is web space. If you have a small web hosting plan and are delivering a lot of large audios and videos, you could run out of space quickly. Documents and PDF space is negligible. Overall, the answer is take a look at your product. If it’s a simple product – chances are it is, then host it yourself. 99% of the time, you won’t have

Quick and Easy Security Reminder

When was the last time you changed your logins? I know… Each time I think about changing passwords I cringe. There are SO many of them! But you don’t have to change them all and having a password manager like Roboform or 1Password for Macs absolutely helps. It’s kinda crazy going without them. What you should consider changing – other than your personal bank accounts and stuff like that are: Blogs – especially the ones that are the busiest/biggest Email PayPal Web site FTP/cPanel – I think this one is important Changing passwords alone won’t guarantee you’ll never get hacked or have any malicious code injected into your web site, but it helps. A moving target is harder to hit.

So there I was hanging out in Twitter again. I have a special stream in TweetDeck that searches for anything to do with membership sites and saw this lady tweeting several times over days about the frustrations she’s been having with aMember. So I reached out and asked what kind of issues she was having and quickly found out that it was something way too big to be handled on Twitter alone. Which is why I invited her over here to do a ‘Blog Consult’ and she agreed. Here’s how it works. I’m posting the details of the issues Alska’s having, asking for pertinent questions. She’ll respond in the comments and we’ll try to solve this whole problem right here. If you work with aMember as well and would like to chime in, feel free to do so. Without further ado. Let me give you a quick outline of the issue. According to Alska, To which I’ll ask now for more information. Can you please clarify what you mean by regular price and what is renewal price? Do you have two products set up for the same item with two different prices? Which is higher? Can you explain how people

Gavel

A Texas district court has ruled that Blockbuster’s terms of use cannot be enforced because the terms included a clause that said it could change at any time. From my understanding (please consult your attorney), because the agreement has that “could change at any time” clause the whole agreement is no longer valid. Which means, if you have that in your terms of service or terms of sale, it’s a good time to update/change it. Granted this is a district court ruling but these things have legs. So… *sigh* another thing to put on the to do list.

Whoa! Auto Web Law Half Price

Screen shot of my AWL

I know, it’s not much of a heads up. I just found out this great product is going for half off and it ends today In case you didn’t know, Auto Web Law is a package that helps you create Web site disclaimers Agreements for services (like VA’s) and JVs Copyrights Non-Disclosure Agreements Newsletters What I like most about this package is that the agreements and forms are built with the Internet Business in mind. They know the kind of deals we Internet marketers work out like JV’s affiliates, e-books, memberships, so they know how to word it properly so you get more customized protection than the standard off the shelf legal form. I’ve been using this for a few years and I tell you, it’s really, handy and I can rest a little easier knowing that I have *some* kind of verbiage that gives me some protection rather than leave my business wide open to all sorts of stuff. Not too long ago, I heard of a blogger who got hit with a huge law suit just because they did an honest review. To me, that is outrageous and at the same time a wake up call. If you

Plucking Up My Courage

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I’m currently reading “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow“ by John C. Maxwell. This book advises you to read only one chapter a day. They chapters are short but so powerful. Right now, I’m at leadership quality #5 which is ‘Courage’. In front of each chapter, there are quotes from famous (and not so famous) people. Every single one of them are good and every single one of them inspired me each day but somehow, today’s really resonated with me. “Courage is fear that has said its prayers” – Karl Barth, Swiss Theologian This hit home. Maybe it’s because someone asked me a question yesterday involving my business that I consistently put off. The question was, if there was a TV publicity opportunity, would I be willing to go for it? If you’ve read my confession just two short weeks ago you’ll appreciate why I’m absolutely terrified. Even as I sit and think about the mere possibility of it my heart is terror stricken to the point I can almost cry. And nothing has even happened yet! Yet, everyone of us needs to stretch and I know in my heart this

Where Do You Host Your Premium Videos?

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

One of the questions that I get asked regularly is, where I upload the videos that are meant for customers or members only? You can’t quite put them on YouTube. For the last 5 years in my business they have always been uploaded to my web host. I do have a lot of space in my hosting plans and customers don’t hit them all at the same time anyway. So that has worked out pretty well. But this time, after re-doing BloggingStarterPack, I have increased the number of videos to 56. I had to find a way to have those videos co-exist with the old ones while I worked out the rest of the details. That kinda put a crunch on the space. Besides, since I was using WordPress to manage the content, I wanted something simple and something YouTube-like. My first thought was Vimeo. They have a new premium service called Vimeo Plus. I did like what I saw on Vimeo Plus. For $60 a year it’s not a bad deal. Yes, you can make certain videos private and only allow domains that you choose to embed the video. And you can also choose to hide the videos from
