Mozy Doesn’t Do Web Site Backup

You’ve seen me post Mozy coupons codes here and you probably know that I use Mozy. If you don’t. Here’s the official word. I do. Have been for 2 years. Love it, love it, love it. But… let’s get this straight. It does not backup your web site. It may sound apparent to some of you reading but I’ve been talking to a number of people lately who mistakenly believe that if they have Mozy or whatever computer backup plan, they are covered both on their computers and their web site. That’s not always true. Here’s why, explained as plainly as I know how.

First, understand how Mozy and many other online back up systems work. They backup your computer to their computers online. This means anything that is present on your computer, gets backed up.

Static HTML Sites

If your site is built 100% on your computer using a tool like Expression Web or Dreamweaver where you save the web site on your computer before uploading to your site – then yeah, Mozy or whatever backup system you use covers your web site.

Blogs / Forums / WordPress / Drupal / Joomla / Fill-in-the-name-here CMS Sites

If your site is powered by WordPress (.org), phpBB, or any kind of dynamic script (software) then no your computer backup plan does not cover them. This is because the content, the images, the software – everything that builds your web site’s pages are 100% stored on your web host. Not on your own computer.

Hope that clears the air because I really hate to hear of you losing anything. It’s hard to hear someone tell me they lost all their work because their computer broke or something happened to their web host. But you know what? It breaks my heart when I hear this from those whom I’ve advised again and again to set up a backup plan for both their computers and web sites.

If you need to backup your own computer, it’s not hard at all really – with Mozy you just download the software, get it installed and it’ll run itself. I’ll even throw in a coupon code so you can get a 10% break. The coupon is MARCH.

If you need to backup your website, try AutoSiteSaver. They’ll do it all for you.

I love me some Mozy too and I think you are a mad fool is you are not using their incredibly easy, cheap, don’t-have-to-ever-think-about-it-backup service. I never thought it would be backing up my site, but thank you for the reminder that I have to start doing that on my site, even though it is super new and doesn’t have much content yet.

Hey Christie, Mozy is great isn’t it? Hey, there’s no time too early to start backing up your site. It may have little content but surely you don’t want to start the design process, editing, installing the site and re-adding content all over again 🙂
