Direct Access

Macro programs have been around for a long time. What are they? Macros are applications that allow you to record a specific set of actions you do regularly and repeat them with a single click or a keystrokes. But that’s not all they can do. You can also save text that you type often, and repeat them with a few clicks or keystrokes. Some macros can even launch applications. I’ll be first to admit, while the thought of macros sounded super interesting to me, it took me a really long time to warm up to them. Mainly because the first few apps I tried was kinda technical and involved a little programming which I’m not a pro when it comes to Windows. Then I found Direct Access. I was still a little skeptical how useful it would be for me. I was attracted to the autotext feature, not so much the application launcher. After all, how hard is it to launch an application? Can’t take more than 5 seconds. Just click Start, then All Programs then look. But once I gave Direct Access a chance I can’t tell you how completely lost I feel without it. Here’s why. Launching an

My Fave Green Tool

Clickbook

Well, I’m on a quick break from client work and thought I’d blog since it is Earth Day. How can anyone NOT blog on Earth Day? Talking about blogging and events, you might want to pick up a free copy of our blogging calendar here. Back to my fave gree tools. You know I am absolutely thankful I don’t have to drive to work everyday. Not only is it good for my wallet it’s good for Mother Earth too. Overall my business is pretty lean when it comes to waste and stuff like that since everything is digital, still, I like to be a little green when I can. The tool that tops my list is ClickBook. I’ve used it for several years now and upgraded a few times. Love it when printing fabulous reports and ebooks like Jimmy D Brown’s because it saves me 50% – 75% of paper every single time. ClickBook allows you to print several pages on one sheet of paper and can also help you print booklets. Another nice thing about it is, you can print directly to PDF too so yeah it’s a PDF creator as well. A comparable software is FinePrint. That one

System Tray

What does your system tray look like? You know that bar at the bottom right corner if you’re using Windows that is. Is it chock full of tiny icons that it runs into two rows? My husband’s computer is like that. I can’t stand it at all. The image you see on this post is the actual screen shot of what’s running on my computer right now. There are currently 9, not counting the clock and volume control. That’s two more than I normally run. Ideally, it’s about 8 when I run Evernote. This is one part of my computer I’m absolutely paranoid about. It increases my boot up time and just plain irks me when installed programs automatically add themselves to my system tray at start up. That’s not the worse, the ones I loathe, start up automatically at boot up and don’t give me a way to take it off start up. Nope, they aren’t even listed in the normal Programs >> Startup folder. Bad, very, very, bad. I’ve done many things to weed my computer off of these rogue start up apps including editing my registry files – totally not recommended. In that case, what can you

MailWasher Pro

MailWasher

MailWasher Pro is a desktop software that will help you quickly sort out spam messages before downloading to your computer. Here’s how it works. You check messages using MailWasher Pro. It’ll automatically check your inbox content and compare your mail with their spam database. If the email is suspected or hits a match in the database, it’ll highlight those messages in red to ‘flag’ them for you. You can also mark messages as good or put them in your white list in case of false positives. I used this because I can filter emails right from the server. Even though your email reader has some of this capability but very often the emails are downloaded onto your computer first and then scanned. To me, this is too late. I don’t want any suspicious email to ever touch my computer. Period. That’s why checking at server level, before downloading to the computer is so important to me. Even my assistant uses this to screen emails for me now. Cuts down her work too as over time, it will be more accurate. You can download a free trial of MailWasher Pro here.
