This interesting question came into my inbox today. This gentleman did a redirect where the old page was static HTML and the new page is powered by WordPress. To keep the traffic flowing properly, he created 301 redirects. However, there is a problem. Apparently, users who visited the old HTML pages before were still being served the old pages and those who never visited before were served the new pages. So he wants to know

In WordPress 3.0, when you do an update or upgrade through the admin dashboard, sometimes it does not complete the job properly. When you try to view your site, you may get a notice like “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance”. The problem is, you can’t get back to the admin either.

The solution is quite simple.

  1. Fire up your FTP or log in to your cpanel or web host control panel.

Let’s say you have an Aweber opt-in form. You’d like to save the information people enter in the opt-in to a cookie that you can then use for something else – like detecting if a user has been on that page before and sending them to hidden content if they are. This tactic I’ve found being used a lot lately during product launches. Maybe not the the exact same technology but if

A reader asks,

…there is the question of considering those sites that offer providing a “free website”, which has a blogging page and of course they come with lots of tools to set it up and I’ve visited some that appear to have turned out satisfactory. So my struggle is why not go with a “free website” which includes a blog page versus a site only for blogging?

I received this question while I was

The built in upgrade and plugin update feature in WordPress is an absolute dream. Sure I know how to do it all manually but yuck, who wants to when you have tens of sites to handle? But the update process can be… well let’s just say finicky.

You know, I kinda expect that. It is difficult if not impossible to create software that would work on every web server in the world now and

A friend was trying to upload like 10 videos to a clients’ site but somehow after the 4th uploading quit and she’d get like unfinished files. No matter what she tried it would not go. What gives?

My first suggestion in these cases is always, always, always check your disk space. She didn’t mention the size of the videos but my guess is, they are almost always large. Depending on the size of the

Great question! I know this is so elementary for some of us but something basic like this can be a huge challenge for someone else who is new. That’s exactly what happened today, I was asked if I have a video to show how to publish a post.

Well the answer is I do and it is inside the Blogging Starter Pack set of videos. To answer the question quickly and simply, this alternative from

Merge

I’ve had to merge a couple of WordPress blogs before – even merged Blogger into WordPress a couple of times. One of the sticky issues about importing is if you already have two established blogs. How do you merge things and keep things straight? One way is to import the posts from the old blog into one specific category in the new blog.

WordPress by default allows you to select which authors to assign

Plug it in

If you use WordPress, you know you get a ton of new updates. We just had one recently and version 2.9 is slated to come out really soon. From WordPress’s blog, they have said most people don’t upgrade because they fear their plugins will quit working. I can absolutely understand that part. That’s why they added a new feature in the plugin directory so users can ‘vote’ on whether a plugin works on their version

When you are using WordPress as a content management system, one of the first things that come to mind is how to organize your content in relation to the theme you are using. In many premium themes, you will find Pages being used to simulate a ‘blog’ which is what I do on this site. You will also find Pages being used in navigation menus. Naturally this causes confusion because these things are already built
