Wow. Yesterday must be one of those days. Not only was my friend and partner Alice Seba affected now my sites are all crazy. Long story cut short, I now have to re-do my posts I did yesterday - for the third time! First time my baby deleted them for me, then my internet connection got knocked off and I lost my posts mysteriously now this :-(
Thankfully I have backups but as luck would have it the backup is not recent enough (just by a few hours). Of course I didn’t lose everything - which would really make me lose my head. One or two posts even though they were pretty long - I can live with. So… what about you?
If your server melt down today do you have a backup? Would you lose everything or just a few posts here and there and a couple of minor edits to your site?
You cannot rely on your web host’s backup because for example in my case, when they are migrating servers, they usually do a backup before migrating. But the time between backup and migration could be a difference of a day maybe two. At other times they may screw up the data - rare yes but it happens like one of my forums became a complete mess because the database re-import didn’t go smoothly.
If you don’t have a website backup plan, get one now. To help you with the downloads, you would hire a VA or you could get CPSite Saver for only $37 (pricing valid at time of writing). It truly is super easy to use, you don’t have to be a techie - you will need your login and passwords handy - set it and forget it. Highly recommended. There are lot’s of offers going on lately to buy stuff but this is one that should be at the foundation of your business. Without your website, you have nothing - very true for us who run online businesses.
Thanks Lynette, I just purchased this from your link! I can’t tell you how many times in the past I needed this software! I heard you on Kelly’s radio show mention it but of course I was at work and soon forgot the name so I was hoping I could find the link on your blog. :)
For my Wordpress blog I use a plugin that I use to grab the db once a week and download the file direct to my computer. Since my website is my blog this is simple and it doesn’t cost money. The plugin is called WP-Backup and I believe it is now part of the WP 2.X core.
Hi RL, thanks for your input. Yes, I am very much aware of that plugin. Unfortunately, not all my sites are WordPress blogs. Some are run by scripts that don’t have a backup tool and some are created using web builders.
