Open Source Software - PDFCreator

September 30th, 2005

This is the first in a series of Open Source software I’m reviewing is PDFCreator. PDF generation software is one of the most asked for items. Most people ask for one that can generate clickable links in the PDF file and there are a plenty of freeware capable of that but one that’s also capable of securing PDF documents, you usually have to upgrade to commercial ware. And that is why PDFCreator is now my new favorite. Yes, it can generate clickable links and secure documents, easy to use - just print :-) and so far, have no problems with the files generated. Verdict - highly recommended.

    Hi Lynette -
I always learn something good from your articles!

Can you tell me if this PDF maker is user-friendly to learn.
I downloaded another one a while ago and it looks like there is a lot of reading and learning to do to get it going.

    Many thanks, Lorraine.

Hi Lorraine, thanks for your kind words :-) in answer to your question not at all. PDFCreator installs on your machine like a printer. So if your original is a Word Document, just hit print, choose PDFCreator and then there will be a short form that pops up asking you to fill in some information like file name, document creator’s name etc simple stuff you already know then hit save and you’re done :-)

    Hi Lynette,
Thanks for the great tip. However, the link is to the patch download page, and not the program. It won’t install the patch without the program. Can you give the link for the original program? Thanks again,

Whoops! Thanks Stephanie for alerting me to that. I’ve corrected the link - it should take you to the download page which contains many different versions do not get the ones that says ’source’ or the ones that says ‘without Ghostscript’ - it is required to run the creator.

Hi Again Lynette! I was wondering if I could be doing something wrong. I created a document in WORD, then created the PDF in the PDF Creator you recommended. The clickable links aren’t clickable! Could I have done something wrong? Thanks,

Stephanie, the links you created are they spelled out e.g. http://www.TechBasedMarketing.com or are they linked text like this? PDF Creator does not make linked text. It will only make clickable links if you spell it out. Most PDF creators work that way. A handful can make linked text like Adobe’s Acrobat itself but my experiences with it have been spotty it would link some text and not others.

I haven’t used them and I don’t know if they will do the job. Lately, if I want pretty links, I’ve been creating PDFs with OpenOffice…
