VA's Upgrade Your Skills

Q: How can I keep people from viewing my source? Can I hide or encrypt it?

A: There are many tools that are supposed to encrypt your HTML source code. You can get them free, you can also purchase software. I hesitate to recommend any such tools because in my personal view, source code encryption is a fallacy. You should know that it truthfully, cannot be done and such tools can easily be defeated. You can read the full article I wrote about HTML source code encryption here. There’s also a video in that article to show you how easy it is to decrypt an encoded page.

I can’t imagine what someone would put in their source code that’s so special. Page layouts are not particularly interesting, and the graphics could be snagged without viewing the source code. Don’t sweat things that don’t really matter.

Hey Ed, You’re so right about the small stuff. Yet, people ask this question so often. The other popular request is disabling right click, no-copy notices and similar. Disabling right click only irritates users. I know it irritates me so much sometimes I leave the site immediately

I use right click a lot to copy a link to put in my rss reader for example, to open the page in another browser or sometimes to ‘clip’ information.
