Lost! WordPress Admin Login

August 13th, 2008

Ya know things happen with these darn computers. It crashes, you forgot to save your password, you lost it or it just quit out of the blue.

Now you can’t access your WordPress blog. When something like this happens for me, it’s easy. Simply edit the database. Understandably, this can be very intimidating for some. Database? What if I break the whole blog or *gulp* delete everything?

Don’t fret, the WordPress Emergency Password Reset is a small, tiny script you upload to your site to reset your administrator password. If you’ve lost the FTP password as well… uhm… tough? No, seriously, just contact your web host.

Be warned - for security reasons, do not leave the script on your web host after you’re done. Delete it at once.

If you find you’re always losing passwords - or maybe losing your mind keeping track of them, I highly recommend RoboForm. It’s oh so very

Tame Those Unruly Sidebar Categories

June 25th, 2008

Take a look at your blog (or website) categories. What do you see? A handful of easy to understand and navigate categories or a tangled mess?

I’ve had this blog for a long time. 4 years to be exact and it has grown up with the blogging ‘industry’. Back then, I created a few categories and over the years this just grew and grew. So now, I am forced to ‘tame’ them. But the problem is, with so many posts, I didn’t want to wait until I have time to re-organize each post. So how do I quickly keep unwanted categories from displaying, so I can deal with them on my own time?

If you’re running WordPress, you’re so in luck because they made is super easy.

Step 1

Log in as administrator, go to you Manage >> Categories to pull up a list of all your categories. Hover your mouse over the categories you want to remove.

Use Versioning: It Can Save Your Behind

June 13th, 2008

Do you ever change something on your site then realized whatever it is you made completely messed up the design. So you go back to take out the change but the problem still remains. You can’t get your site back to where it was. So frustrating!

I’m not afraid to admit I’ve been in that place way too often. Thankfully, one of my developers got me in the habit of Versioning. Versioning is act of process labeling or logging each change you make to a file or software. Sounds so difficult and complicated right? It is totally not. Here’s what you do.

Before making any change even if you know you’re not going to mess up anything - this by the way is especially helpful when making changes to WordPress themes - make a copy of that file and append the date. For example, I’ll rename the sidebar.php to sidebar-080613.php.

Add White Space To Your Images Automatically

May 28th, 2008

Squished Text

Alice Seba recently posted on Twitter that one of her pet peeves is images without white space around it. Honestly, that drives me nuts too. I cannot stand text being squished up to the side of an image. Yeah, it’s picky but at the same time, it’s about making your site look good. I know you want it to.

Good Spacing

Well, I for one prefer to have as little HTML in each page as possible. Therefore, I use CSS to help me. It’s not quite automatic but pretty darn close.

Here’s how you’d do it with just a little bit of CSS code.

Before you proceed, it is wise to make sure there is no code that already does this in your stylesheet. Otherwise, the browser will automatically choose one, ignore the other and you’ll be wondering why it didn’t work. First, enter this into your CSS

Where To Find Music You Can Use For Free

April 17th, 2008

MusicWhile working on a short video the other day, I needed to come up with some background music quickly. This was a one time, 1minute +  video for a site that I consider ‘hobby’ so I didn’t exactly feel like paying $8 for the music. Off I went to look for free music.

By the way, if you’re ever in this situation, here are two keyword searches you could use.

  • “podsafe music”
  • “open music”

Since then, I’ve seen some of my Twitter friends asking for places to find free music and have decided to list some sites I found. Please take time to read the terms. Not every single piece of music in this list is free for commercial use although most are and sometimes the artists are simply asking for a small credit or link back. Not too much to ask.
