Before You Post
March 7th, 2008
I am not in the habit of sticking stuff to the sides of my screen. But there are some things I feel is important enough they should be clearly viewable.
Before I send any blog post to publish, I usually ask myself a few questions. So, I made this Before You Post card to stick on my monitor. That way, I’ll remember to ask them on every single post. Even this one ;).
The questions are designed to make sure I don’t blog about something I’ll regret later and also to maximize every post I publish. Not every one of the suggestions work on every single post, but it forces me to ask it so I don’t miss out on any opportunity.
Oh and by the way, you still have time to register for IMBloggingBootcamp where you’ll find personal and private help to get the most of your blog.

Thank you for this list, Lynette. I’m printing it as we speak! I’m a fairly new blogger (jus two weeks into it), but I feel like I got off to a good start just by reading all your great emails and tips. :)Thanks again!

Should this be private is a big one! I closed down a blog because of a post that affected my personal life way too much. Great list!

I think we take too much for granted when we’re behind the screen - sometimes we need to take a deep breath and think about what we’re sending out into cyberspace. We need to teach our kids about this too. More and more employers are “googling” prospective hires and posting pictures of your latest drunken all nighter might not be a good idea!

@Tsoniki: Uhuh. I’ve seen many private posts and often wondered how their families feel reading them. The most private insight I’ve posted here is of course related to my workaholism check-ins. They can run the gamut of emotions and often deep but each one of those posts, you betcha I read and re-read them before publishing.
@Merlyn: It’s also not good for business
and I realize some of my very own posts may not go well with a prospect. But I’m OK with that. I can’t win them all. Still, I’m only willing to lose but that much
so each post is also a calculated risk.
